Passing the Flame is a glass bead making book by Corina Tettinger and is pretty much regarded as if you only buy one beadmaking book, you get this one!
It was quite the investment as the book is not something you can pick up on sale at your local bookshop but it was worth every penny.
It's full of great illustrations, large colour photographs and it will take you through the basics of how you can hold rods and mandrels, through to much more complex topics.
I love Corina's style of writing, she has a very dry sense of humour and if you are ever going to indulge yourself with an expensive coffee table book this is well worth the money; it also comes in handy for me to flatten my roles of kiln paper after I've cut them to size... but shhh don't tell anyone as it's probably against the law to use it for such a trivial purpose!
What is the most expensive book you have ever bought?
Why is it the essential books are always so expensive - oh yes, I know, because they're essential ;P
ReplyDeleteThe most expensive single book I ever bought was probably one of my uni text books, y'know, the ones that were listed as compulsory so they charged an absolute fortune for them. And TBH, I don't think I ever read a single text book at uni, since I did computer systems engineering, and that was either the lectures told us what we needed to know, the book was literally a language reference, or the info was online.
The most expensive book I ever bought that I actually wanted to read has to be The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, which is actually 3 books in one box, weighs enough to take your back out when lifting it and each book has to be rested on a table or a knee to be read. But it is what it says, the complete set of the adventures of a boy and his stuffed tiger :)

Oh god yes, essential non-essential uni books! I remember those!!
DeleteThis was definitely by far the most expensive book I've ever bought... ironically now that I've read it, I've seen so many 2nd hand copies for sale, typical!
Your most expensive book sounds adorable :)

I get the feeling Mars that one day a blogger will be writing a post about how your book is the essential everything about beads go to book... :) @ Sophie if this was fb I would like your comment :)...
ReplyDeleteYes I would like Sophie's comment too, definitely a best expensive book to buy choice!

LOL - all heavy books have more than one use :). As Soph said above - text books that were never opened - so expensive and useless! I'm not sure what would be the most expensive book I have in the library - probably my encyclopaedia of fantastic beasts or something like that.

It helps that's it's big too so the paper fits...
DeleteIt is a great book though, I have a few others I've picked up 2nd hand but it is called the bead bible for a good reason :)

Ha ha, looks like I'm not the only one who thought of expensive school books :D My best was the one that I used as a computer monitor for the entire term, only opening it for the first time the day before the exam to look something up.
ReplyDeleteThe second book that I thought of was a book that I didn't buy, but that I almost had to buy. I borrowed a book of knitting patterns from my local knitting guild, and then misplaced it, only to find out that it was out of print and would have cost me about $150 to replace! Thankfully I found it before I had to buy a new one. A few years later they did another print run and I managed to get a copy for myself (because I really liked it!) for a reasonable price. But I was panicking a bit at the thought of paying that much for a book that I couldn't even keep.

Wow on the knitting book! I did that with a borrowed VHS tape from a colleague of my husband, only the machine chewed it up.
DeleteLuckily there was a DVD version (no chance of getting a VHS one at that time) but I had to buy the whole of Season 5 Angel (as in Buffy & Angel) to replace it - I did this before I told her about the chewed tape and luckily she thought I was thoughtful to be honest and try and make amends beforehand... and that she had a DVD player!
